Palden's website OakDragon Camps in 1987
the first year

These pictures were taken in OakDragon's founding year. OakDragon had been started on the momentum of the Glastonbury Camps (1984-86). The photos here are taken from the Beltane camp in West Penwith, Cornwall, from the Music and Dance and the Arts and Crafts camps at Nanteos Mansion in Wales, and from the Ancient British and Tribal camps in West Wales, 1987.

The pictures were taken by Mali, Persh Sassoon, Savindra and Michael Bloom.  To read my account, called Coming Home, of the founding of the camps movement in the 1980s, click here.

There are lots of photos here, so it will take time to fully load!

The early OakDragon camps were remarkable – things were in some respects more vivid, energetic and naive in the 1980s than in the 1990s, in the camps. Yet the camps carry on, under the auspices of various banners. The OakDragon continues today, though smaller and less dynamic than in its early days.
