It is wonderful to see public awareness the world over gradually shifting towards a global turn-around. It's perhaps 25 years later than it might have been, but long-awaited times of paradigm shift are now with us. It would be better if it were more of a conscious process, but force of worldwide circumstance is pushing us along from behind, obliging humanity to take responsibility. The outcome of the recent Earth Summit is a statement of how far we have moved.
One thing concerns me, however. It's a symptom of the Nineties-syndrome: faced with the multifarious consequences of all of our previous historic acts, we are overwhelmed with a plethora of issues in need of resolution. In our preoccupation with environmental crisis, minority rights, reform in governance, creation of a sustainable world economy, and a zillion other matters, we are perhaps overlooking one of the biggest issues of all.
As usual, we hope it will go away. The overlooking of this issue partly results from public unknowing, though a lot of it arises from a collective unwillingness to confront a deeply-held taboo. What I am referring to is the escalating situation concerning extraterrestrials being among us. Whenever it happens, the implications of this realisation will be vast.
People have been chasing and investigating UFOs since at least the 1940s. Channelling from ET sources has been coming through since the 1890s, highly variable in information-value and flavour. Significant encounters have happened, up to and including secret official ones involving governments. All this is well-chronicled and documented, for those who will investigate though there's a lot of 'noise' amongst the valuable material. The more recent crop formations in over twenty countries, some very sophisticated, are being carefully researched by dedicated investigators, and by defence agencies as well. Yet the public taboo against looking seriously into all this still continues, despite exposures and growing public availability of evidence.
The problem arising from this taboo is that we are thereby omitting to look into the different types of intelligent beings visiting Earth. We're so busy denying them rather than studying them! We need to identify clearly why they are coming (there mat be many reasons), and what we need to do about it (this might be variable too). The universe is a busy place, like a multidimensional ecosystem, and with immense biodiversity and psychodiversity. Without learning how to discern one set of visitors from another, we are at risk of rendering ourselves vulnerable to some visitors, shunning those visitors who might help us, or gullibly welcoming those who might not have our welfare in mind.
Quite a few different groups of intelligent visitors seem to be visiting us physically or communicating psychically. Some seem to be here because they have been actively involved with us for a long time, and because we now are at a super-critical stage of evolution which they seek to monitor or assist. They seem to be very evolved beings, aligned to a mega-universal purpose, or beings 'contracted' to them. They are supportive, but like wise guardians of unappreciative teenagers, they tend not to interfere unless obliged to: the life-charter for planet Earth involves intelligent custodianship by beings with free will us and a major breach of charter would occur if there were direct meddling or intervention.
After all, if we Earth humans transform ourselves and turn Earth into a planetary Zen garden, learning from our mistakes, from our wisdom and our 'soul-memory', a powerful crop of six billion or more intensely-educated souls will make an eventual big difference in the universe. We would have become enlightened in spite of the stickiness and corruptedness of life on Earth. This will surely be a boost to evolution, a gift to the universe.
Intervention by higher beings would benefit the purposes of a second type of visiting beings beings whose aim is indeed to override our free-will and to control. Since an intervention, even a benign one, would mean that free-will is overridden, the human experiment on Earth would be ruined. As a result, the controllers would have a field-day. These less wholesome beings are here because they seek to obstruct, contaminate and complicate Earth evolution, to maintain human ignorance and irresponsibility as the norm. This is part of a larger cosmological plot intent on befouling the deeper purpose behind the universe as a whole. If the Council of Nine are to be believed, planet Earth has become a rather important little node in this plot.
Plenty of Earth humans many in positions of power are receptive to these control-seeking beings, while the majority of people acquiesce, allowing control-influences by omission or commission. Thus such obstructing, controlling beings have delegated responsibilities to Earth humans, who are well capable of acting according to their patterns. The obstructors need only to act directly when the pro-evolution type of beings gain noticeable strides or initiatives, to counterbalance their influence. According to this logic, Tienanmen Square and the Gulf War served to divert positive energy generated in favour of freedom and democracy in 1988-9. This is a rather 'manichaean' approach, painting a picture of a battle for control between forces of light and darkness yet, while it is not quite that simple, it has a basis in reality, as far as I understand it.
This battle of wits has shown itself in the crop-formations, where the significance and beauty of the greatest formations has been corrupted by formations of a more dubious character and pattern, of both ET and human creation. Sincere investigators have obediently fallen into dissension and confusion as a result, conceptually blocked by the anti-ET taboo, intellectually stymied by doubts in the correctness of their perceptions, and emotionally battered by the poignancy of it all.
Yet others ET beings, deriving from different parts of our own galaxy, are of a less evolved nature. Yet they still look very advanced to us. They have come because they are variously investigating what's happening on this provincial planet, which has, in the last 100 years, suddenly started pumping out radio signals, nuclear radiation and exceptionally unusual vibrational fallout. Some wish to quietly observe, some might be trying to assist (though they might not comprehend the whole picture) and others are using our planet as a genetic sampling patch and even as a potential colony.
Either way, their different messages and activities are confusing things, both for us and for other ETs. A major proportion of the UFO sightings, some crop formations and many channelled messages come from this group, with varying outcomes though some seem enlightening and positive. It is not my right or prerogative to identify who does what, or how they rate, but perhaps elucidating these considerations helps toward each of us making more informed assessments. Either way, there's an extra confusion: some beings who describe themselves, in channelling or direct encounters, to come from the Pleiades or Sirius, say so in order to give us a notion to hang on to we are probably incapable of understanding what or where they derive from, so a useful name-tag is given to satisfy human respondents or contactees.
In Britain, crop-circle enthusiasts plunge into crop-formations without appreciating that some are wholesome, educational and evolutionary, while others have questionable backgrounds and effects, on people, landscape and the collective unconscious. I'm referring not to man-made hoaxes, but to formations which have attractive characteristics, yet lack the special panache, artistry and atmosphere of 'true' formations, and even can be outrightly negative and weird. They're created 'on the back of' the 'true' formations and the trouble for us is distinguishing which is which.
Similarly, cereological investigators, covering their backsides against potential ridicule, have avoided discussing or fully investigating the ET option [this was written in 1993 things have more recently been changing]. Thus they omit to give their attention to a big question. Even the frequently-adventurous editor of the English journal the Cereologist, John Michell, wrote (issue 6, summer 92) that the 'UFO theory' of crop-circle causation lacked strength because 'the cause, nature and meaning of UFOs is unknown'. This is true, but it doesn't downgrade the ET hypothesis.?
ET realities and crop formations are posing ever-increasing questions and wiping out most initial answers. This is mainly because the various beings behind this are either deliberately serving us enigmas, to coax us through a shift of awareness, or because they are seeking to obfuscate, mislead or simply add extra corn-graffiti depending on what motivates them. Some have humour! The purpose behind the enigmas is to wring out our rationality, to show us the limitations of our thinking, and to demonstrate a relationship between consciousness and matter. It is to help us move into an integral awareness wherein we can see and resonate with the innate ET logic and the meaning of the coded pictograms landing up in homeopathic amounts in our breakfast cereals. Possibly they also seek to demonstrate an area of psychokinetic technology with which to detoxify and restore balance to planet Earth. This is what I myself feel, though few would easily agree.
Intellectually, we could argue until we're blue in the face about the existence of ETs, their vehicles, their connection with crop phenomena, or about the validity of different psychic channellings and still get nowhere very far. Instead, we need to formulate some working hypotheses concerning possible realities, and follow these through to see what emerges. The working hypothesis I suggest here is that multiple agencies are visiting planet Earth, to some of which we need to give attention, and to others of which we need to give no power at all and there are others representing variant shades in between. It isn't a simple good-guys and bad-guys situation. Put another way, I suggest that neither outright scepticism or unquestioning acceptance of ET influences is valid. Yet we need to develop an intelligent discernment and mature attitude to distinguish what is going on.
Science avoids discernment by deciding that all paranormal phenomena are irrelevant, illusory or explainable by other means, failing to recognise that scientists and rationalists are frequently protecting their own interests more than the cause of truth. The new age movement needs a dose of discernment too: the gullibility factor is high being an over-reaction to rationality and scientistic or conventional unbelief. If a convincing-sounding spiel is put out, people bite the bait, making themselves available to apparently divine sources without asking basic questions: what truly motivates these beings? I cannot profess to have final answers, but here are some clues to help discern one source of phenomena or channelling from another:
The difficulty is that there are many voices broadcasting, and many different kinds of phenomena. Also, we humans are new to this game, and very under-informed, struggling through the dark. We do have a full range of human faculties available, of both a rational and an a-rational kind, both valid, and we do have an urgent need to apply these to the question of carefully but openly assessing our future options.
I'm suggesting awareness, sense, clearer thinking on why these visitors are here, and on how their various logics might work. This ET question could bring either mega-solutions or mega-problems for us, and we need to be aware. The choice is in our hands. Some of these beings are friendly, and want to help us help ourselves. Human life on planet Earth is not destined to be destroyed: the purpose of our historical evolution is by no means fulfilled. These ETs, whether we like it or not, seem to be our neighbours.

* check the motivation of the beings involved: often it will be the case that the more a phenomenon or channelling emphasises its presence, correctness or authority, the more questionable the motivation is. By your own feelings and by their own works shall you know them. Truly evolutionary beings, genuinely helping Earth, are discernible by such qualities as modesty, patience, honesty, artistry and clarity and an absence of manipulation;
* does the source communicate clearly, in unmystifying, comprehensible, unambiguous terms? Does it answer questions openly, and does it explain why it chooses not to answer, when it (perhaps legitimately) refuses to answer a question?
* does it, in its actions or words, respect and honour the free will of humans? For example, the manifestation of crop circles in cornfields offers humans the choice to give them attention or not meanwhile, an abduction has a questionable side to it with regards to respect of free-will;
* does it encourage a sense of responsibility and encouragement for Earth and for our fellows, or does it give us underlying feelings of helplessness, escape, elitism? Is it empowering or disempowering?
* does it encourage humans to think for ourselves, or does it encourage unquestioning belief in what is communicated or manifested?
* does it make promises or threats, blatant or subtle?
* is it truly informative?
* are you assessing them on the basis of their coming from the Pleiades or Sirius, or their using an impressive-sounding identity (such as Jesus, Archangel Michael or the Rear-Admiral of the Intergalactic Federation) or on the basis of the inherent sense and value of their message? In other words, apply the same criteria to ETs or psychic sources as you would a human leader.
* bear in mind that, just as individual nationalities on Earth each have their viewpoint, so do ETs. Also, project directors have more overall understanding of things than project workers and ETs coming from star systems in this galaxy are not project directors, unless on their own projects;
* are you forming conclusions either on the basis of scepticism or bedazzlement? Are your mind and heart at one on your conclusions? Examining our own secret vested interests is hard, but important.
