Autumn in England

In springtime 2010, despite a hard winter and a late spring, the bluebells ran riot. Fortunate to be living in a rather magical 12-acre wild-gardened property not far from Hayle in West Cornwall, under an ancient sacred hill called Trencrom Hill, I photographed the billions of bluebells there and assembled them into this montage, to give a sense of the profuse delight of living in a place carpeted with bluebells.

Britain is now being colonised by a new, invasive kind of bluebell from Spain, introduced by gardeners. The indigenous bluebells of Britain are like these in this montage, with a hanging bell. The invading bluebells have an upward-turning bell, and they grow faster and generally squeeze out the natural bluebells of this country. Mercifully, in Cornwall, the indigenous bluebell still lives happily, manifesting sheer delight during springtime.
