hope-flowers.orgThis independent humanitarian school in Bethlehem on the West Bank of Palestine depends on international outreach for its funding, so its English-language website is very important to its survival - particularly because of travel and communication problems incurred as a result of the Israeli occupation around Bethlehem. ![]() The Hope Flowers School was founded in 1984 and it is a world pioneer in trauma treatment of its pupils, aiming to produce graduates who understand constructive ways of avoiding violence. ![]() When I came along, the school had a really bad site. I used photographs taken by a Dutch visitor and spruced up their text material, editing and reorganising it into a viable and comprehensive website. On this site there is a static top-frame serving both as a title and navigation frame, and the main frame below scrolls up underneath it. ![]() The site assists greatly with fundraising. Using plenty of photos of children and life at the school speaks volumes, addressing the heart-strings of potential supporters. But this is necessary - complacency in Western countries is a big problem, but potential donors don't want to be harangued and cajoled. ![]() So I took a soft approach, using charm and human feeling as a design message, to pull people in - and knowing also that 60-70% of the people who mattered would be women. This is pro bono work, done because it needs doing. |
